How To Clean Upholstered Furniture

The upholstery on your furniture can get pretty dirty over time, especially if you have pets or kids—accidents happen after all. You can keep your upholstery clean by giving it a nice vacuum and scrub down at least once per month to keep your furniture looking its best. See below for instructions on how to clean upholstered furniture.

1. Take It Apart

Take off all of the pillows and cushions and vacuum the dust off of them, as well as the upholstery below the cushions. If you can't pull off the cushions, use a hose attachment to get into all of the crevices. Put the pillows into the dryer with tennis balls to get the dust knocked off of them and to help fluff them.

2. Inspect/Clean Stains

Look over the cushions to see if there are any stains. If you notice any stains, be sure to treat them. Look at the upholstery tag to see how to clean your upholstery first. The type of upholstery you have may not be cleaned with a water based cleaner, so be sure to look at the tag first. The tag should have an "SW" on it if it can be cleaned with water and a cleaning solvent. Just a "W" means water only, and "X" means dry cleaning only. If your upholstery can be cleaned with water/cleaning solvent, use a mixture of 2/3 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup dish detergent and 5 cups of warm water. Test the mixture on an area that isn't noticeable first. Use a soft bristle upholstery brush to apply the mixture to the stain. Rinse with a clean rag and allow it to dry. Repeat the steps if the stain is still there.

3. Cleaning Upholstery

To clean the rest of the upholstery, you can rent a vacuum cleaning machine with an upholstery attachment. The upholstery attachment allows you to clean your upholstery with the same type of deep cleaning that you would use to clean your carpeting. Look for an upholstery cleaner near the cleaning machines for rent and follow the manufacturer directions. Begin using the cleaning machine attachment on your furniture by going over the cushions first and laying them flat to dry. Then go over the rest of the piece of furniture with the attachment. Be sure to clean the top, arm rests and bottom (where feet may touch) thoroughly. Allow your furniture to dry thoroughly before attempting to use.
